SAND BANKS, DUNES

LETEA SAND BANK
This is a marine sandy land found between Chilia channel and Sulina channel. It is supposed that these dunes, as well as the one from Caraorman, belong to a sand barrier which separates the  Tulcea Gulf (situated on the present surface of the Delta) from the Black Sea. This sand barrier is oriented from north to south and made the Tulcea Gulf transform in a first stage in a lagoon and then into the Danube Delta, by slowly clogging  the lagoon. An unique forest developed on the Letea sand bank. In this forest, on a sandy land, one can find unusual tree species that normally do not belong to this kind of ecosystem: the fluffy ash tree (a rare specie), the greyish oak tree (that reaches 25 m height), the elm tree, the alder tree, the can. Even though the climate is not a Mediterranean one, some climbing plants can be found in Letea forest. This forest is just like an ecosystem where many reptile live (lizards, snakes) but also predatory birds which feed themselves with these reptiles.

CARAORMAN SAND BANK
On the western side of the Caraorman village, around 500 m far from it, very fine sand dunes were formed, dunes that can be found only in three places in Europe. Herodotus and Polybius mention in their papers the big sandy areas from the river mouth of the Danube ("a sand bank with almos 1000 stages (167 Km) one day walking far from the shore." - Polybius). These sand dunes from Caraorman cross-cut the Danube and together with the ones from Letea represent a part of the chain that initially blocked the Tulcea gulf, transforming it into a lagoon which clogged giving birth to the Danube Delta.

TREES RESERVATIONS
LETEA  FOREST - "HASMACUL MARE"
Letea Forest represents the monument forest situated 7 km south of the Periprava Commune (Chilia Channel). The sand bank bearing the same name has developed in stripes, Mediterranean climbing plants such as creepers can be found on these banks as well as specific trees such as greyish oak trees (very old trees reaching 25 m of height), the can, the elm trees, alder trees, white poplars and black poplar, willow trees, fluffy ash trees (botanical rare specie). The forests hosts also the white-tailed eagle, snakes and adders.

CARAORMAN FOREST
Caraorman Forest means in Turkish "The Black Forest". This name comes from the rich vegetation and from the thick branched oak trees which lay on an area of 3000 ha. This forest is made up of oak trees that grow on marine sandy land. The creepers that can be found in the Caraorman Forest are 25 m long, they are unique in Europe and they have a Mediterranean origin. These creepers give to the forest a sub-tropical aspect taking into account that some other climbing plants can be found here: the wild vine, the ivy, the hop, the tendril. In the same beautiful forest one can find different trees, some of them very rare in Europa and even in the world: 25 m high oak trees, elms, willows, white and black poplars, alder trees, fluffy ash trees. Special places can be found in the Caraorman Forest such as "The Fountain of the Hunters" where a 400 years old oak tree with 4 m diameter. This oak tree has been called "The Kneeled Oak Tree" because of its branches that touch the land."The Kneeled Oak Tree"  becomes a part of the breath taking scenery of the Caraorman Forest and of course of the unique landscape of the Danube Delta. Caraorman Forest is protected by the law being declared a monument of the nature.

CARAOMAN FOREST
On a marine sandy land an oak forest developed that got the name of Caraorman Forest which means The Black Forest in Turkish. The old oak trees, with big branches and rich vegetation make the shadow so thick that some of the places in the forest become very dark. These places gave the name of the forest (the black forest). The creepers are a curiosity of the nature ( Greek Mediterranean Periploca reaching a length of 25 m – unique in Europe), here it reaches the northern limit of its extent. These creepers together with some other climbing plants such as: the wild vine, the ivy, the hop, the tendril give to the forest a subtropical aspect.1615 species of plants have been observed in the Danube Delta, representing a third of the total known plant species from Romania. Among the trees from the Caraorman Forest we can name: 25 m high oak trees, elms, willows, white and black poplars, alder trees, fluffy ash trees, the last ones becoming a rare specie. The white tailed eagle nests here.
